Coffee Milling Performance Standards Compliance
Enhancing wastewater performance for a multinational portfolio of industrial coffee mills, to meet investor standards.
Working for a global coffee company over a 5-year period on a strategy to achieve IFC Performance Standard compliance for wastewater discharges from a portfolio of industrial coffee mills across Central and South America. Providing initial wastewater treatment diagnostics, working with mill management and local technical teams to identify infrastructure and operational water use reduction and wastewater quality improvement strategies, focusing on treatment techniques that harness the simple-tech and organic characteristics of the coffee milling industry. Identified Improvement opportunities were set out in multi-year investment strategies, with seasonal wastewater and river water quality monitoring programs to qualify and quantify improvements, and to help refine the strategy for the following harvests. Reporting processes were set up to provide internal stakeholders with updates on progress though each harvest, and for periodic and end of season results analysis and conclusion reporting to DFI stakeholders.
